Phonic or not phonic?

Happy New Year !

Welcome year 2020!!

Apart of lawak klise pasal kereta terbang, tahun 2020 is so meaningful because finally my eldest child masuk darjah 1. Tapi entry kalini not to write about her being in standard 1, i intended to share our experience/observation with her and her little brother learning experience during the pre school.

Nowadays there are too many options utk kindergarten or pre school in Malaysia which to be specific at our area, Gombak. Bergantung pada preference dan bajet parents, pilihan sentiasa terbuka. Except for Tabika KEMAS, in our area the application is only open for certain income group hence that option is not viable for us.

Back to Hana our daughter, masa umur 4 tahun di Kertih kami hantar tadika biasa nama Maskana. Hadi at 3 yo also di tempat yang sama but under day care program. Hana progressed well, boleh baca basic word, kenal nombor, good at tracing, boleh hafal ayat-ayat lazim etc.

Masuk umur 5 tahun kami berpindah to Gombak, due to limited time to survey for the best centre, we opted to send Hana to CIC (Children Islamic Centre) dengan objective menambah baik kemahiran Hana converse in English sebab as parents kami guna bahasa melayu sajor di rumah (aku tak reti cakap english bila sesama orang melayu ni haha) Beside CIC masatu kami cuma notis ada Genius Aulad tetapi packagenye lebih daripada bajet kami. Manakala Hadi pula kami hantar di day care biasa dalam kawasan apartment kami, 3 bulan lepas tu baru kami enroll Hadi ke Little Caliph sebab kami baru perasan wujudnya LC di kawasan itu hihi...

LC punya yuran is lebih murah berbanding CIC. Module not my expertise to comment which one is better, nanti kena saman. Cikgu-cikgu both baik and responsive to our needs, kelengkapan both pun memuaskan hati. English wise actually both pun tak guna sangat dalam class room teaching mereka, cuma basic instruction je command in english.

Development Hana di CIC is not visible, almost none. Perhaps sebab dia dah ok sangat masa di Maskana, kami don't feel she had improve semasa di CIC. Manakala Hadi progress biasa-biasa je di LC dari segi akademik....ni bukan salah LC or cikgu ye, maybe just our son Hadi. Apepun dari segi agama kami happy tengok dia boleh hafal zikir dan ayat lazim.

On that note dan faktor harga, masa umur 6 tahun kami moved Hana from CIC to LC. Hadi pula remain di LC. Alhamdulillah Hana progress slightly better than in CIC, selain boleh sembahyang, akademik pun agak laju, i still believe this is due to Maskana good basic (kaedah traditional bukan phonic) Hadi macam tu jela, dah 2 tahun dalam LC tapi progres agak menakutkan haha...untuk akademik la.

Hana graduated from LC as best student utk cawangan dia la. Hadi terpaksa kami tamatkan di LC, tahun 2020 ni Hadi kami masukkan ke Tadika Titian Sayang, kami pilih tadika biasa yang bukan franchise dan guna method traditional dalam P&P kerana kami rasa ia masih kaedah paling praktikal untuk develop a kid.

Personally i am against phonic system especially for Bahasa Melayu, kids are exposed to the sound instead of alphabet. Yes they can read but they cannot spell the word! they don't event recognize A to Z. I could be wrong but my experience told me so, Hana can spell, read and write due to Maskana traditional method...once she had the basic then she can adopt phonic system easily in LC. Hadi was first introduced to phonic system, he can only read but cannot write and spell properly.

After all, why we love to fix something that is not broken??
